Bradfield residents and Australia Post mark the 150th anniversary of skiing in Australia
This month’s issue of stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of skiing in Australia follows advocacy by Pymble residents Philip and Pam Woodman, President and Secretary of the Perisher Historical Society, said Paul Fletcher, Federal Member for Bradfield today.
“I was very pleased to assist them in urging Australia Post, directly and via the Minister, to issue commemorative stamps,” said Mr Fletcher.
“Residents of Bradfield have played a big part in the growth and popularity if skiing in Australia.”
“The new stamp issue features the alpine pursuits of skiing and snowboarding.”
“Generations from the local area spawned numerous ski clubs, including Telemark Ski Club which was the first in Perisher Valley with founding members including the Halverson family of sailing and Hawkesbury Cruiser fame.”
“Bradfield community groups and societies focused on outdoor pursuits – such as Scout groups from Gordon and Killara – were central to the establishment of many of the ski lodges and clubs.”
“Philip and Pam Woodman have been instrumental in gathering together the history of skiing in the New South Wales alpine region and sharing it with current and future generations.”
“There are historical records, photos and stories of the building of ski clubs and lodges; the earliest ski and outdoor shops – including that begun by Lindfield identity Paddy Pallin; the evolution of ski and snow equipment and activities; and of course the changing on and off-snow fashions.”
“It is important to celebrate historical milestones and anniversaries – such as the 150th anniversary of skiing in Australia – to provide an opportunity for reflecting on the past and acknowledging the great achievements of the skiing pioneers from our local area. And also for looking towards the future and the next generations of local skiers who will create future histories,” Mr Fletcher said.
